First things first, this is an overhaul, this isn’t just about downloading a couple of music apps and eventually paying a subscription to go ad-free. No, this is about how to get the very best musical experience from your phone. The simplest, the smoothest, and one that covers all fronts. 

The first thing to do is download the IFTTT app. This isn’t actually a music app (good start, right), rather, it allows all the apps and functions on your phone ‘talk’ to each other - meaning that you can have all the songs you like on YouTube and Soundcloud or the top tracks of r/ListenToThis automatically added to a playlist in your Spotify, or you can create an archive of your Spotify discover weekly playlists, or even have them sent to your loved ones in an email automatically.

Soundcloud

The best app for discovering independent music by artists who are still struggling to get signed, or who just don’t care about being signed at all. The app is totally free and allows you to follow small artists, staying up to date with their latest releases, as well as sometimes getting access to free downloads. TuneIn Radio

Sometimes you want someone else to do the choosing. TuneIn Radio allows you to listen to thousands of live radio stations around the world. The app is free, although there are in-app premium features available such as listening to the NFL live. 

If you’re driving but can’t access your favourite stations from home, or you just want something to get ready to, then we recommend you put this on your phone. What’s more is that the app tells you exactly what song is playing on your phone - something that you don’t even get with regular radio!

Radiooooo

Don’t be fooled into thinking that this is another normal radio app. Oh, and there’s five ‘o’s in the name, in case you were wondering. Radiooooo starts by having you select a country, then a decade and then either Slow, Fast or Weird. It will then play a song that meets those criteria. 

Want to tune into some Vietnamese music from the 1960’s and hear all the best sounds coming out of Saigon and Hanoi? Or maybe you want to hear some weird North Korean music from the 1980’s? To be fair, all the North Korean music on the app is pretty weird…

Shazam

What’s this song called? Quickly, Shazam! The app that works like magic will tell you what literally any song is if you just press record and hold it up to the speaker for a few seconds. It then saves the song into a playlist on the app (and in your Spotify, if you’re using IFTTT). 

This app is amazing for discovering new music and holding on to the tracks you hear when you’re out and about. Once you’ve ‘shazamed’ them, you can either buy them, or just listen to them on Spotify. You never have to leave room wondering what that awesome song was again!

Musixmatch Lyrics

The world’s biggest collection of lyrics. Musixmatch allows you to find any song that you’re listening to - similar to Shazam - with the lyrics. It also provides English translations of songs with lyrics in a foreign language. If you’re a musician, karaoke enthusiast or just like singing in the shower or on the way to work, then this is the app for you. 

There’s also a premium feature which allows you have offline access to lyrics. You can add all the songs you discover to a Spotify playlist automatically by downloading the IFTTT app.
